QR Code Size Guide: How Big Should Your QR Code Be?

QR code size directly affects scannability. Too small and phones cannot read it. Too large and it wastes space. The right size depends on scanning distance and the complexity of the encoded data.
Minimum Size Rules
The absolute minimum size for a QR code is about 2cm x 2cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches) for close-range scanning. This works for business cards and small labels where the phone will be held close to the code.
Size by Scanning Distance
A general rule is that the QR code should be at least 1/10th of the scanning distance. For a poster viewed from 1 meter away, the QR code should be at least 10cm (4 inches). For a banner viewed from 3 meters, at least 30cm (12 inches).
Common Sizes
Business cards: 2-3cm. Product labels: 2-4cm. Flyers and brochures: 3-5cm. Posters: 5-15cm. Banners and signs: 15-30cm. Billboards: 50cm or larger.
Data Complexity Matters
More data means more modules in the QR code, which requires a larger physical size to maintain scannability. A simple URL creates a sparse, easy-to-scan code. A full vCard with address and multiple phone numbers creates a denser code that needs to be larger.
Print Resolution
For printed QR codes, ensure a minimum of 300 DPI. Each module (smallest square) should be at least 0.75mm wide for reliable scanning. Lower resolution or smaller modules lead to scanning failures.
Testing Is Essential
Always test your QR code at the intended print size and scanning distance before mass production. Use different phones and scanning conditions (indoor, outdoor, various lighting) to ensure reliability.
