Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which Should You Use?

Understanding the differences between dynamic and static QR codes.

QR codes come in two fundamental types: static and dynamic. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right approach for your needs.

Static QR Codes

Static QR codes encode the actual content directly in the code pattern. Once created, the content cannot be changed. If the code links to a URL, that URL is permanently embedded in the pattern.

Advantages of Static Codes

Static codes work without any server or service dependency. They are completely free to create and use. They work offline since the data is in the code itself. They are more secure since there is no intermediary that could be compromised.

Limitations

The content cannot be updated after printing. Longer content creates more complex codes. There is no way to track scan analytics. Mistakes require reprinting.

Dynamic QR Codes

Dynamic QR codes contain a short redirect URL rather than the actual destination. When scanned, the redirect URL forwards to the actual content. The destination can be changed without reprinting the code.

Advantages of Dynamic Codes

You can update the destination URL at any time. Scan analytics (count, location, device, time) are available. Shorter redirect URLs create simpler, more scannable codes. A/B testing is possible by changing destinations.

Limitations

Dynamic codes depend on a redirect service that must stay online. Most dynamic QR services charge monthly fees. If the service goes down, the codes stop working. There is a small added latency from the redirect.

When to Use Each

Use static codes for permanent information like WiFi passwords, vCards, and content that will never change. Use dynamic codes for marketing campaigns, event promotions, and any situation where you might need to update the destination or track analytics.

Our tools generate static QR codes, which are ideal for most personal and small business uses. They are free, permanent, and require no ongoing service.
